As a student Stephen took a course on Snow and Ice geography, and later did his undergraduate 4th year research thesis on the role of wind in redistributing snow on lake ice and its effect on lake ice development. Later he taught that same snow and ice course as a sessional instructor, as well as courses on glaciology and hydrology.
